My internship as the Producer and Account Intern at Red Productions was one of my first real-world experiences in the industry.
I started the semester doing social media work after the release of our Michael Irvin video for the Dallas Cowboys. I promoted the video by finding relevant audiences, interacting with them on Instagram, and directing them to similar Cowboy's videos by Red Productions. This required me to keep up with the football community and conversations. I was intimidated at first, but loved it when these users replied to my posts with jokes (like the hashtag “gohamwiththecam”) or compliments about our video. Since then, the video has received just under 95,000 YouTube views and the “finishthefight” promoted hashtag was used in 126,000 posts on Instagram!
I helped organize the Fort Worth test screening for Stereotypically You. Red Productions executive produced the comedy and was looking for audience critique to improve the movie. I was responsible for coordinating the event to avoid technology issues or lost or uninformed audience members. During the screening, I assisted the director to pass out surveys and took notes during the discussion. I had never seen a movie in this stage, without all the special effects finished, and was surprised by the amount of feedback the audience provided.
As the account intern, I worked closely with our producers. This experience gave me the opportunity to: research companies we were working with and logistics for upcoming shoots, sit-in on a client conference call, work on many creative briefs with key insights for videos, and look at production schedules and planning binders.
The interns also helped plan a party celebrating the company's 10th anniversary. This experience helped me to become a successful party planner as well. The event had an open bar, two food trucks, a slo-mo photo booth that served as a guest book (with the Red Dragon camera being operated by the interns), and concluded with a preview screening of Balls Out which premiered in select Los Angeles theaters during the summer of 2015.
Red Productions was great about allowing interns to try their hand at all aspects of the industry. I was a production assistant on set for a commercial, read scripts and wrote coverage (see sample provided on the left of this page), learned editing basics (see editing page), and helped with a casting session in Dallas.
